NAACP Lansing Urges Local Leaders to Act Against 'Inhumane' Evictions
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The NAACP Lansing Branch is calling on elected officials to intervene in what it says is an illegal attempt to evict residents of Kristana Mobile Home Park in Dewitt Twp.
“This is not just a housing issue — it is a civil rights issue,” wrote the organization in a press release obtained by 6 News. “When landlords exploit loopholes, misrepresent occupancy, and leave families without basic services like water and sewer, they violate the dignity and humanity of residents who already face barriers to fair and stable housing.”
Residents of the park have previously told 6 News they received notice the park was shutting down on short notice at the beginning of April, due to declining occupancy rates and the inability to maintain the park. From there, residents say the water was shut off at the park on April 2, and they believe the owner has turned off the lift pump connected to the sewer .
According to residents, the park gave them two options—to take $1,500 and move out within 25 days, or take $2,000 and leave in 10 days.
The NAACP Lansing Branch, however, claims that what the park's owner is doing is unlawful.
"These community members — most of whom have limited incomes and are longtime homeowners — are facing something akin to a widespread constructive eviction and punitive relocation due to actions taken by an unlicensed property owner who lacks legitimate grounds and is blatantly contravening Michigan’s housing laws," stated the organization.
The group is urging local and state officials to reinstate secure water supplies at the park and provide safeguards along with financial assistance for relocating residents. Other requests encompass seeking a legal order to prevent any displacements or involuntary moves and imposing a ban on evictions from unauthorized trailer parks.
They also wish for the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs along with the Department of Attorney General to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into what they refer to as an "ongoing pattern" of unlawful evictions by the park’s owner.
In recent weeks, 6 News has attempted communication via phone calls and emails with the owner of Kristana Estates. Additionally, they have tried reaching out through a contact mentioned in correspondence addressed to the residents.
We haven't received a response from them as of yet.
