Metro Police and Las Vegas Neighborhood Unite for 'The Big Walk' Annual Event

LAS VEGAS (KLAS)—The Las Vegas Metro Police Department alongside Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom organized the third annual The Big Walk. This event aimed at fostering stronger connections, celebrating the community spirit, and promoting unity among residents.

The Big Walk was initiated in 2023 as a reaction to rising homelessness and criminal activity around Twain Avenue and Cambridge Street.

"It's an age-old adage that the police are part of the community and the community forms part of the police. This day allows us to interact with families, volunteers, and others within our community in a less conventional manner," stated Under Sheriff Andrew Walsh from LVMPD.

While walking around, volunteers distributed safety materials at local malls and residential buildings to assist individuals requiring support.

Most of the walk took place at Molasky Park, which is a spot for families and children to have a pleasant outing. However, according to local residents, the area has witnessed a rise in homelessness over the last several years.

"This isn’t limited to just one densely populated area; numerous regions have populations facing homelessness. Our approach will be to go to these various locations and provide assistance directly to those in need," stated Louis Lacey, the director of homeless response for Help Southern Nevada.

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission reports that Nevada holds the fourth position nationally for the highest number of individuals without shelter. Narla Benet, who has resided near Molasky Park for two years, believes that engaging personally with Metro police fosters stronger ties between residents and law enforcement.

Let's converse to build understanding and familiarity between us," Benet stated. "We should regard one another as individuals rather than members of a group.

LVMPD aims to highlight their D.R.E.A.M. initiative, an acronym that represents discover, redirect, empower, advocate, and mentor.

The initiative underscores the significance of mentoring for youths facing challenges in the Las Vegas area. Its aim is to guide these individuals towards making constructive choices and avoid detrimental actions. For those who wish to learn more about the program, additional details can be found here.
