LSU Issues Statement After Resignation of LSU Health Shreveport Chancellor David Guzick

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Dr. David Guzick The chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport has stepped down from their position.

Guzick, who has been serving as chancellor since January 2023, submitted his resignation letter to the system Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, April 23.

The following message was issued by LSU President William Tate IV:

On April 23, Dr. David Guzick, MD, PhD, submitted his resignation to me, William F. Tate, IV, who serves as the President of LSU. Since taking office as Chancellor at LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) in January 2023 and as Dean of the School of Medicine in June 2024, Dr. Guzick has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills.

Throughout his term, the research sector at LSUHS has expanded considerably, with an average increase of 14% in external funding. From July 1, 2024, fourteen new funded investigators have joined, further propelling the rise in research activities at LSUHS. However, this expansion led to a scarcity of laboratory spaces, a challenge ingeniously overcome through the acquisition of the old Sears site located at Mall St. Vincent. In the coming three months, the Sears building will commence its conversion into a specialized research center focused on cardiovascular and oncological studies. Importantly, this initiative does not require any public funds and is expected to be completed swiftly, aiming for the opening of the much-needed research facility sometime between mid-to-late 2027.

As the Dean of the Medical School, Dr. Guzick played a crucial role in implementing an updated, interactive learning program and effectively resolving the institution’s probationary standing. The LCME, which is responsible for accrediting MD programs in the U.S., granted full approval to the medical school in March 2025.

Collaborating with leaders at the Ochsner LSU Health System, Dr. Guzick has laid down a solid groundwork for top-notch patient care and operational efficiency. This initiative aims to enhance an integrated academic medical institution capable of addressing regional healthcare demands while fostering economic growth.

LSU had the good fortune to bring aboard Dr. Guzick, who joins their ranks as a distinguished and accomplished academic medical leader, standing alone among Louisianans as an active member of the esteemed National Academy of Medicine. His contributions have been invaluable, and we express our gratitude for his leadership at LSU Health Shreveport, ensuring benefits well into the future. An announcement regarding an interim replacement will be made shortly.
