Jailed for Rape: Callous Man Targeted Vulnerable Woman

A "cold-hearted" man has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting and abusing a susceptible woman 23 years ago.

Inderjit Singh Bains, aged 46 and from Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, carried out a "brutal assault" on a woman in 2002 after she got into his van in St Werburg’s, Bristol. According to the trial, he violently struck her multiple times in the face and torso, resulting in one of her teeth being knocked loose, followed by rape.

On Thursday at Bristol Crown Court, Bains received a sentence of ten and a half years for rape and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The investigating officer, PC Chris Quick, stated: "Bains conducted a brutal, heartless, and vicious assault on a defenseless victim, resulting in severe injuries and a lifelong ordeal for her."

When Bains selected her around 1:00 AM GMT on January 10, 2002, she was operating as a sex worker.

Once a payment was agreed upon, Bains headed toward Eastgate, as requested by her destination preference.

Nevertheless, Bains did not cease his journey and proceeded to Frenchay, where he halted in an isolated spot near Stoke Lane.

The victim requested payment initially, and after that, Bains feigned reaching into his jacket before he assaulted her.

She had committed Bains' license plate to memory, leading to his identification and subsequent arrest when she informed the authorities about the event in 2022.

In order to safeguard others, the survivor filed a report with the One25 Project—a organization aiding women in the street prostitution sector—shortly following the assault.

The document contained details about the perpetrator along with their license plate information. However, it was several years before she mustered the courage to inform the authorities, as she grappled with the psychological impact of the assault.

In an impact statement presented to the court, the victim mentioned that although the physical effects eventually subsided, the emotional repercussions persist.

She stated that the crime had such an immediate and traumatizing effect on her that she resorted to using heroin to numb any emotional response.

I genuinely believed I would perish that evening; such trauma isn’t readily overcome.

She informed the court that a stigma persists for women caught up in the "way of life" associated with sex work.

"It was the most difficult choice for me to step forward once more after all these years," she stated.

The judge stated that he must spend two-thirds of his sentence in custody followed by the remaining one-third on license, and he will also be placed on the sex offender registry.

He will serve an additional two-and-a-half-year term for assault at the same time as his sentence for rape.

'Strength and courage'

PC Quick mentioned that the victim had to endure the past 23 years deprived of the justice she rightfully deserved.

Her choice to step forward and disclose this offense showcases her unwavering strength and bravery.

I genuinely wish this result will inspire other survivors of sexual abuse to speak up when they feel prepared, knowing confidently that their concerns will be acknowledged.
