Idaho 16 Between Meridian and Star to Close This Sunday: Plan Your Route Accordingly
A 2.5-mile portion of Idaho 16 will be shut down for all traffic on Sunday.
On Thursday, the Idaho Transportation Department announced in a press statement that the highway located immediately west of Meridian will be shut down in both directions from State Street (Idaho 44) to Chinden Boulevard beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
That particular section launched in 2014 as part of an update. long-touted vision To transform the former quiet State Highway 16 in Emmett into a freeway running southward to reach Interstate 84. Now ITD is striving to construct an interchange at the intersection of Idaho 16 and Chinden Boulevard, as well as extend the highway further southward.
ITD’s statement indicated that "damaged asphalt...has caused a bulge in the road" and mentioned that the team will be working to replace the asphalt with the aim of providing "a smoother driving surface for commuters."
Sophia Miraglia, who serves as a public information officer for ITD, has not yet responded to a voicemail left by the Idaho Statesman seeking clarification on what caused the issues with the asphalt.
Motorists are advised to seek detours as the road will remain closed until 6 p.m., as stated in the announcement.
