Groveport Family's Home Burns: Firefighters Save Grandfather’s Ashes Amid Devastation

A Groveport family is beginning anew after losing their home and nearly all of their possessions in a house fire.

"I descended from the porch and witnessed flames erupting through the attic," explained Faith Murphy-Pickett, a high school student who resided in the house with her mother and grandmother.

For generations, Faith's family has resided in this house. Following the blaze, according to the assistant fire chief of Madison Township, the dwelling was declared uninhabitable.

She mentioned, 'It’s tough, but I’m simply handling it one day at a time.'

I lost my father in this home, which makes it incredibly significant for me," explained Crystal Smith, who is Faith's aunt. "It was here that I learned how to drive and experienced many things. This house holds great importance for me.

Faith mentioned that their dogs and cats were lost in the blaze. Currently, they are residing with Smith. Should you wish to assist the family during this challenging period, they could use your support. collecting donations via GoFundMe.

They count on me to stay composed, the one who keeps everything under control," stated Smith. "As long as they're safe, we'll be okay. Material things can be replaced, but not them.

The Madison Township Assistant Fire Chief stated that they are currently investigating and trying to determine the cause of the blaze. According to him, when firefighters arrived at the house last Thursday evening, they found flames erupting from the rooftop. The official mentioned that the presence of numerous possessions within the residence posed an additional difficulty for the responding teams.

As they determine their next steps, Faith and her aunt experience relief upon learning that the crew has rescued a cherished object within, namely Grandpa's urn.

"When we were heading back to the car, which belongs to my mother, the firefighter mentioned something about bringing it along. They came with it, and we realized it was Dad’s belonging. It had been rescued," Smith explained.

The family is grateful for the backing provided by the Groveport Special Olympics community and Faith's school district.
