Gauley Bridge Transforms Train Station Into Cozy Lodge to Boost Tourism

The Gauley Bridge train station was established in 1893 and previously facilitated individuals from various towns entering the region in pursuit of employment opportunities within the coal sector.
Today, over six decades after the final train pulled into this station, it is welcoming visitors as an Airbnb.
“Anyone with a passion for history or simply someone who enjoys spending time outdoors would love this place,” remarked Brittany Taylor, owner of the Gauley Bridge Train Station. “It’s high time we make it accessible to everyone. Up until now, it has not been available for people to enter, explore its interior, relax, and take in the stunning vistas of Gauley Bridge.”
The new Airbnb is located only a few minutes from both Cathedral Falls and Kanawha Falls. Mayor of Gauley Bridge Bob Scott said that he hopes with the new addition that travelers will make Gauley Bridge a destination.
“Starting an Airbnb will definitely attract more tourists,” Scott stated. “We plan to benefit from this by drawing visitors here. The vista from that railway station overlooking Gauley Bridge is spectacular. We see ourselves as the genuine entry point to the New River Gorge Bridge.”
Once the station shut down its rail operations in the 1950s, it was repurposed as a fire department before eventually becoming city hall.
Scott mentioned that transforming the train station into a multi-purpose venue for visitors aligns with the building’s rich history of serving various roles. This initiative also supports the broader objective of repurposing idle structures to revitalize Gauley Bridge and maintain its heritage.
Taylor said that seeing her hard work come to life has been amazing, and is glad that visitors have the chance to stay and explore around the region.
An exceptionally unique experience," Taylor stated. "I’m looking forward to them witnessing the rich foundational history that Gauley Bridge possesses locally. They will also be able to appreciate all the picturesque landscapes around.
