Charleston Council Votes to Lower Speed Limit on Kanawha Boulevard

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — During a recent city council gathering, the Charleston City Council deliberated over and approved a measure that would reduce the speed limit on Kanawha Boulevard from 40 mph to 30 mph.

This decision works alongside the Capitol Connector Project, set to entirely revamp the well-liked thoroughfare. The initiative involves decreasing and slimming down vehicle lanes, simultaneously providing greater room for bikers and pedestrians.

The resolution's sponsor, Councilwoman Mary Beth Hoover, stated that speeding is not only a concern along Kanawha Boulevard but is also a widespread issue throughout the entire city.

It's a significant issue throughout the City of Charleston; you see this all over town," Hoover explained. "I believe everyone is rushing, whether they're heading somewhere important, looking for shortcuts, attending meetings, picking up their children from practices, or simply trying to get back home. Our schedules are packed, particularly within our bustling downtown area which is known as both pedestrian-friendly and welcoming. It's crucial that we start paying attention to this and make an effort to slow down.

Hoover mentioned that she has received complete backing from her fellow council members, and noted that due to the design of the Capitol Connector Project, lowering the speed limit seems like a logical choice.

"When we implement this redesigned version, it will make more sense for the speed limit to be set at 30 mph. This adjustment will better suit drivers as they'll likely choose to drive slower due to changes in lane configurations and the overall layout, which will create a more park-like environment. The new design should enhance everyone's experience with improved pedestrian safety," Hoover stated.

Kanawha Boulevard is a heavily traveled route, providing numerous access points to downtown Charleston as well as a straightforward passage to the Capitol Complex. The area sees considerable pedestrian activity too; however, this, coupled with vehicles moving at high speeds, often leads to hazardous conditions.

"At peak hours, particularly during some parts of the day, especially when there's been an incident on the freeway, crossing can be incredibly challenging. People often dash across; I've even witnessed parents rushing with baby strollers. It turns into something like a game of Frogger," Hoover explained.

Hoover states that once the Capitol Connector Project concludes, the lowered speed limit will come into play. Construction is expected to start by the end of this year.
