Blue Angels Thunder: F/A-18 Jets Soar into Augusta Air Show

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – These pilots form the second oldest official aerobatic team globally, performing aerial maneuvers in planes such as the F/A-18 jet and C-130 transport aircraft.

We had the opportunity to observe their pre-show rehearsal and talk with Sergeant Benaiah Smith, who mentioned that he still finds joy in flying with the Blue Angels.

Smith said, "The Blue Angels have come to showcase the capabilities of Marine Corps and Navy aviation, putting them on display for the entire world."

The Blue Angels contacted Sergeant Evan Scureman, honored as the 2025 Firefighter of the Year by the Augusta Fire Department, offering him an opportunity to fly aboard the C-130 "Fat Albert."

"I mean it's an extraordinary chance to be here and undertake something that most people can only imagine doing. I believe it's truly a remarkable honor, and perhaps that's the best way to describe it; this is something I will cherish for a lifetime," Scureman stated.

The pilots undergo training for the air show many months beforehand, supplemented by additional practice when they arrive at the airport.

Smith stated, "I find the landscapes and exploring new destinations quite captivating. Since I haven't ventured through much of the U.S., this is an excellent chance for me to visit various towns and cities across the country."

If you wish to witness the aircraft in operation, the aerial exhibition takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the Augusta Regional Airport.
