‘Better at Racing?’ – Kyle Busch Compares Joe Gibbs’ Legendary Careers in the NFL and NASCAR

It’s not every day you find someone who’s conquered two of America’s biggest sports. Joe Gibbs is a living legend in both the NFL and NASCAR, building a legacy that’s hard to top.
Recently, NASCAR star Kyle Busch—who spent 15 seasons racing for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR)—opened up about his old boss during a fun moment on Bert Kreischer’s cooking show “Something’s Burning.” It turned into a heartfelt, funny reflection on the man who helped shape his career.
Joe Gibbs: From Super Bowl Glory to NASCAR Dominance
Before his NASCAR days, Gibbs won three Super Bowls with Washington—in 1983, 1988, and 1992—and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
He founded Joe Gibbs Racing in 1992, and since then, his team has won five NASCAR Cup Series championships. Busch himself brought home two of those titles in 2015 and 2019. Gibbs was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2020, cementing his rare two-sport legacy.
And JGR’s not slowing down. This season, they’ve already claimed five wins in the first eight races, thanks to Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell.
Kyle Busch’s Bittersweet Memories
During the show , the two-time Cup champion spoke warmly about his time with JGR. Though he’s no longer with the team, his respect for Gibbs was clear.
Kreischer kicked it off by praising the coach-turned-owner: “Joe Gibbs was a coach for a Super Bowl team and now he’s a NASCAR legend. That’s kind of wild to switch occupations that late in life and then be at the highest competition in both.”
Busch responded, "He claimed three Super Bowl victories with the Redskins and, as a NASCAR team owner, has secured four NASCAR titles. In fact, he has more NASCAR championships under his belt compared to his coaching achievements with the Redskins. Which do you think he excels at: football or racing?"
Kreischer chuckled and said, "I believe he excels more at racing. That’s insane."
Next up was the iconic Kyle Busch moment: "He did fire me, though," Bush remarked with a smile, casting a look toward his spouse. It was uncomfortable, truthful, and perfectly in character.
However, after 15 seasons and two titles, Busch was unequivocal in expressing only admiration for Coach Gibbs.
Whether it’s the Super Bowl or the Daytona 500, Gibbs knows how to win. And in both arenas, his legacy is one of the greatest ever written.
