The crime, which happened on a warm spring evening while numerous children played in Eastside, also has raised questions about why Paterson has not yet installed the 51 security cameras for parks that the City Council voted to buy last October.

Councilman Alex Mendez concurred. "It's essential to install cameras at the park entries," he stated. "The presence of these cameras should make individuals reconsider committing crimes once inside the park."
Mayor André Sayegh stated that the cameras would be implemented gradually, beginning during the summer season. He mentioned that these cameras would "provide comfort to our community members knowing that their kids can enjoy secure areas for recreation."
At around 5:55 p.m., a 21-year-old woman lost her life and a 24-year-old man sustained injuries during a shooting incident near a parked car along the pathway linking the upper and lower sections of Eastside Park. By Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement officials had not yet reported any arrests related to this event.
Gunfire 'targeted specific people'

Mendez stated that according to information provided by officials, the investigation suggests the gunshots were aimed at particular individuals rather than being a random attack. "This seems to be an isolated incident," he noted.
The councilman stated that young people were engaged in a game of baseball at Larry Doby Field, which is directly underneath the area where the shooting occurred. Additionally, numerous children could be found enjoying the recently unveiled playground that was inaugurated towards the end of last year.
It was really frightening when I learned about the shooting since I'm aware of the number of kids usually present in the park during that hour," stated Mendez, representing the 3rd Ward where Eastside is located. "Fortunately, thankfully, no one else was struck.
The Police Department issued a statement Wednesday saying detectives were “working around the clock to bring those responsible to justice.”
“Parks are among Paterson’s greatest assets, and violence in these safe spaces will not be tolerated,” said the police statement. “Residents will see an increased police presence in all city parks as the PPD remains vigilant in our commitment to keeping the community safe.”
Sayegh said his administration has made improving Paterson’s parks — which he asserted had been neglected for decades — one of its priorities. He said the city has spent more than $100 million in federal, state and county funds, along with private donations, on recreation upgrades.
Velez stated that the city should enhance park safety protocols as it aims to make recreational areas more appealing to everyone.
Crimes are occurring in locations where we doesn't expect them," Velez stated. "It’s essential to foster a behavioral culture that ensures safety. need more cops , and we need a comprehensive plan before it gets out of hand.”
