Jackson Voters Eye Shift to General Election as Call for Change Grows
JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV In Tuesday’s Municipal Primary Runoff Election, voters in Jackson opted for change. Attention will now turn toward the General Election scheduled for June.
Almost 25,000 individuals cast their votes in Jackson’s mayoral runoff election. Of those voters, the majority who participated in the Democratic primary elected State Senator John Horn (D-District 26), defeating the current mayor, Chokwe A. Lumumba.
"I am quite certain that Mr. Horhn will uphold all his previous representations, and I am looking forward to observing his growth as a leader," stated Kathy Smith, a voter from Jackson.
Councilman Brian Grizzell from Ward 4 stated he is prepared to collaborate with the incoming mayor, emphasizing his desire for progress on road improvements and addressing neglected structures.
"We're planning to welcome them and eagerly anticipate collaborating with them to ensure that our priorities are effectively conveyed and that we can move our projects forward," Grizzell stated.
Councilman Vernon Hartley of Ward 5 stated that the electorate desires a distinct vision from City Hall. He mentioned he intends to collaborate with the incoming mayor regardless of whether a formal plan is established.
"But it's considerably simpler when we have clarity on the path forward. Provide us with a strategy so we can back any administration with funding and legislation from the legislative branch," Hartley emphasized.
Voters in Jackson will head back to the polling stations on June 3, 2025. They will have the choice of selecting from Democratic candidate John Horhn, Republican nominee Kenney Gee, along with independent contenders Rodney DePriest, Zach Service, Lillie Stewart-Robinson, and Kim Wade.
